Synopsis:

In 2001, I shot my first film about a Romany Gypsy family that lived in a shantytown. Aida was a smiley teenager who was in love with Di Caprio and dreamed of being a model and a singer. 20 years later, she is nowadays a mother and a wife. She has depression. She has been to jail. She wants a divorce. This is the story of her fight for emancipation, independence and a new life far from the countryside.

Curatorial note:

Giovanni Princigalli offers us a direct record of two separate temporalities, 20 years apart. Alternating between footage shot on a video camera in the early 2000s and scenes from the present day, it’s striking to see the contrast laid out on the screen: we are part of the concrete effects of the passage of time in the evolution of both the protagonist and her surroundings. What changes in a community and what resists change? This is what the director invites us to explore as we follow Aida’s day-to-day life within a deeply patriarchal context that seems to continue perpetuating unjust traditions. Tobías Ramírez
