Synopsis:

A cinematic testament created over a period of 15 years, Afterwar is a meditation on the long-term repercussions of war. Interweaving raw realism and staged performance, this hybrid film follows four children from Priština, the capital of Kosovo, as they transform into adults before our eyes in the country in which the aftereffects of the war from late 1990s are still felt; they remain in limbo, haunted by memories, and dreaming of a better future.

Curatorial note:

We could say that Kosovo is the youngest country in Europe. When it comes to a novice country, we might show its independence, its culture, its symbols. Afterwar, in turn, chooses to shine a light on children throughout time, showcasing the generation that war begets. Birgitte Stærmose immerses us into the innocence of four kids as they grow into young adults and reflects on their dreams, crystalized by the aftermath of war to ask themselves what present—and what possible futures—they get to live.
