Synopsis:

Olga Kosanović was born and raised in Austria, but could not become an Austrian citizen yet. In a newspaper, someone made a comment about her case: “If a cat gives birth at a riding hall, that doesn’t make her kittens lipizzans.” This demarcation generates a feeling of identity and cohesion: a strong sense of who “we” are. What concept of identity underlies a legislation that divides society between an “us” and a “them”? A film about belonging.

Curatorial note:

Olga Kosanović traces in this film the lines that divide the borders of her own identity. She foregrounds herself in order to examine closely the arbitrariness and, even, ridiculousness by which nation-states determine who can and who cannot belong to them and in what way. What does it mean to “be” from somewhere? What responsibilities and duties does it entail? Who decides it for us? This film invites us to reflect on our own citizenship and territoriality, maybe even ponder ignored virtues. Mariano Pozzi
