Synopsis:

An unwanted pregnancy triggers the journey into adulthood for Makenya, a Dominican-Haitian teenager who lives in a batey, a community surrounded by sugarcane fields. Sugar Island is a powerful drama that explores the legacies of colonialism and social injustice, portraying a path to liberation through political awakening and the acceptance of ancestral spirituality.

Sugar Island is one of those rare films that can weave together a multiplicity of themes effortlessly—and does so with impeccable audiovisual composition.
